Review: HD Laryngoscopes — Olympus ENF-VH vs. Pentax VNL-1590 STi
Detailed one-week head-to-head comparison (June 2012). Recording setup: MacBook Pro, Final Cut Pro, AJA Io HD, RAID10 storage (~10,000 exams over 10 years). Compares Pentax 720p (5.1mm, $54K system) vs. Olympus 1080i (3.9mm, $62K system). Also includes Kay-Pentax stroboscope vs. Olympus StrobeLED comparison, and Toshiba 9213HD rigid endoscope.
Verdict: Olympus ENF-VH rated 10/10 — superior 1080i resolution, 3.9mm fits almost all adults, NBI/narrow-band imaging outstanding for vascular patterns and tumor margins. Pentax rated 7/10 — excellent durability, 720p resolution, but 5.1mm limits use in ~15% of patients. For daily workflow: Olympus as primary, Pentax as secondary. Pentax ~10% less expensive. Olympus ENF-V3 (2.6mm) excellent for children age ~4+.
Migration note: Highly relevant to HD Laryngology page (/HD QR) and the Laryngoscopy section. Remains useful for historical context and equipment selection rationale.
