Relapsing Polychondritis

Relapsing polychondritis is a rare autoimmune disease that attacks cartilage throughout the body — including the cartilages of the larynx and trachea. As the laryngeal framework degrades, the voice softens and the airway narrows. In severe cases the trachea collapses on inspiration, causing life-threatening stridor.

Management

Management requires systemic immunosuppression — typically corticosteroids and steroid-sparing agents — along with close monitoring of the airway. When tracheal involvement is severe, tracheotomy or airway stenting may be necessary.
