These are the standard set of tasks that comprise the Vocal Capabilities examination.
Reading task
— assessment of the comfortable speaking pitch
Maximum phonation time
— amount of time phonation sustained on one breath at comfortable speaking pitch
Pitch range – low
— assessment of the lower vocal range and lowest notes produced at any volume
Pitch range – high
— assessment of the upper vocal range and highest notes produced at any volume
Loud volume
— assessment of vibration at high subglottic pressure
Vegetative sounds
— assessment of percussive glottic closure
Swelling tests
— assessment of low volume upper range
Neurologic findings
— listening for tremor, spasms, weakness
Respiratory findings
— listening for noise or vocal cord entrainment during breathing
