Our Mission
VoiceDoctor Institute is a nonprofit organization founded by James Phillip Thomas, M.D., dedicated to advancing the education and clinical training of physicians in laryngology and voice medicine. The Institute designs and delivers intensive, hands-on educational programs for otolaryngologists, laryngologists, residents, and related healthcare professionals, with the goal of improving diagnostic and surgical skills in the care of patients with voice, airway, and swallowing disorders.
Drawing on more than 25 years of clinical practice and teaching at the forefront of diagnostic laryngology, the Institute brings together expert faculty from across the world to share what they have learned — not just technique, but the interpretive intelligence that separates a good clinician from an exceptional one.
Every program the Institute offers is built around a single conviction: the most powerful tool in laryngology is a well-trained eye, guided by a well-trained ear. We teach physicians to see more, hear more, and understand more — and by doing so, to serve their patients better.

Founder
Laryngologist in private practice in Portland, Oregon since 1999, Dr. Thomas has dedicated his career to voice care, diagnostic laryngology, and the education of the next generation of voice physicians. He lectures internationally and maintains the widely used educational resource voicedoctor.net.
The VoiceDoctor Institute emerged from his belief that the most critical skill in laryngology — the ability to see, interpret, and diagnose what is happening inside the larynx — cannot be learned from a textbook alone. It requires mentorship, repetition, and direct access to expert clinicians who can guide a physician’s eye and ear simultaneously.

Train physicians in the systematic, evidence-based approach to laryngeal diagnosis — integrating high-definition endoscopy, stroboscopy, auditory analysis, and electromyography into a unified diagnostic framework that leads to more accurate, earlier diagnoses.
Teach the Next Generation
Provide intensive, hands-on educational experiences for otolaryngology residents, fellows, and early-career laryngologists at the critical stage of their clinical formation — when mentorship has the greatest and most lasting impact on patient care.
Foster International Collaboration
Bring together expert faculty and attendees from across the world to share advances in phonosurgery, neurolaryngology, office-based laser surgery, and subspecialty laryngology — building a global community of practice around voice medicine.
Bridge Specialties
Create educational environments where otolaryngologists, speech-language pathologists, voice teachers, phoniatricians, and neurologists learn together — because the voice is too complex for any single discipline, and the best care emerges from shared knowledge.
Advance the Science of Seeing
Promote the adoption of high-definition imaging, selective color endoscopy, and emerging technologies in clinical laryngology — and teach physicians not just how to use these tools, but how to see and interpret what they reveal.
Support Independent Education
Maintain strict independence from commercial influence in all educational programs. All curriculum, faculty selection, and learning objectives are determined solely by the Institute’s educational mission — ensuring every program meets the highest standards of integrity and objectivity.
