Since 2002, Dr. Thomas has welcomed physicians from around the world to Portland to study laryngology — a few for a full clinical fellowship, many more for weeks or months of observation in the clinic and operating room. They now run voice clinics, teach, and publish across the Americas, Europe and Asia. This is where they are today, and the work some of them published with him.

The things that stand out in my mind:
- Attention to detail
- No short cuts to a well worked out diagnostic plan
- Honesty with the patient which actually would only come with a lot of confidence
- The last patient to be seen as well as the first of the day
- Even an 85 year old man has the right to a good voice
- Painstaking thought in preoperative preparation
- Records are key as is documentation — to be reviewed and re-reviewed and re-reviewed — your ability to do that is remarkable
- To listen before the ‘look’
- Your ability to use technology — that I do not even pretend to understand!
- Your honesty with yourself
